Tin Roof Estate Wines started out as a pet project upon our move to the Central Coast from the traffic-impacted craziness of Los Angeles. Guided by one of the best winemaker teams in the Paso area (thank you Randy and Cheryl!), we've been fortunate enough to source amazing fruit from the Templeton Gap district...the rest takes care of itself! If you're fortunate enough to find yourself with one of our bottles, then know that you're in an inner circle and we are thankful for the roll you play in our lives!
Our label pays homage to our family mango farm...Kapoho, Hawaii. Located on the east side of the Big Island, Kapoho was our family compound; an open-air farm structure surrounded by mango and coconut trees planted by Oma's family in the 1980s. It started out as 2.5 acres of lava rock and Christmas berry shrubbery, but with the addition of truckloads of cinder and years of patient attendance, it was transformed into a beautiful tropical garden filled with delicious mangoes, date palms, hundreds of coconut trees, starfruit, lilikoi, and even avocados and tangerines! Special standouts were also a California redwood, Monterey pine, Orange coconut tree, as well as a personal favorite of Grandpa Tommy...durian! It was a magical place, and quickly became our family retreat over the years, beautified by Grandpa Tommy's and Tutu Colleenah's loving touch. Unfortunately, in the lava eruption of 2018, Pele decided she loved Kapoho too, and claimed it back as her own. Tin Roof Estate Wines exists to keep the memory and image of Kapoho alive and in our hearts and minds forever.
Whenever we look at a bottle of our wine, we are immediately transported back to that main room in Kapoho, and the sound of the rain against the tin roof accompanied by the soft winds through the coconut palms as they sway gently in the breeze.
We hope that when you open a bottle of our wine, you find yourself making memories that are just as cherished.
Aloha!
Crafted as a special treat for Casey & Tyler's wedding, our rose is not lacking in color! Done in a saingee style using our 2017 Cote du Rhone-style Syrah, the deep color was the result of 18 hours of skin contact (it took that long to find the five carboys to make the wine in!) Great for those hot summer nights...and tastes even better on the water!
This was the first wine we crafted after living in the Central Coast. Following a 48 hour cold-soak, and a meticulously nurtured fermentation, it was moved into the Phillips barrel room in a once-used French Oak barrel for 18 months. It was then blended with 40% new French oak, which led to this beautifully structured wine. Easy to enjoy now (after a bit of a decant), but likely to only get better over the next decade...plus!
Fortunate to have access to delicious viognier, we were able to do this in a Cote du Rhone style (5% viognier, 95% syrah). This helps contribute a lively floral front palate, as well as stabilizing the deep color of Miracles Ranch syrah. Drinking wonderfully right out of the gate, but Brad is really excited to see what it turns into over the next twenty years!
As a special homage to our son, the fruit for this wine was actually picked the day we were released from the hospital! Tully’s first stop before home was the winery! The fruit for this wine was amazing, so we dedicated a new French oak barrel to the process. The hope is that we’re opening up a few of the larger formats on his 21st birthday! As luck would turn out, the barrel and the fruit just sang together, so this is a 100% new French oak barrel bottling!
Done in the traditional Spanish “Mataro” style, this wine was a lot of fun and is equally at home at that backyard Summer barbecue…or Thanksgiving feast!
We truly cannot thank Randy & Cheryl from Wild Rose Vineyards enough! As we tell everyone, with a lot of help we can make some very good wine! Their guidance through every step of the process (not to mention getting to use such quality winemaking equipment) is the cornerstone of this passionate project, and continuously gives us glimpses of their sheer vinous brilliance! We simply couldn't have done it without them...and if we had, we're certain the wine wouldn't taste as good! Mahalo!
